"It is not a matter of you choosing me. Rather I chose you and have appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and the fruit (you bear) should remain, so that whatever you may ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. What I command you is that you love one another. If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it has hated you. If you were of the world it would have loved (you) as its own. But you are not of the world. I chose you out of the world. Therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I told you. A slave is not greater than his lord. If they (enemies of Jesus) persecuted
me, so then they will also

persecute you. If they had kept my word, so also would they keep your word. But they will do all these things (c/f persecution) to you because of my name and because they do not know the one who has sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them they would not have sinned. But now they have no cover for their sin. The one who hates me also hates my Father. If I did not do such works amongst them - things that no other man has ever done, then they would not have sinned. But now they have both seen me and have hated myself and my Father. This has happened so that the word in their law should be fulfilled, that is "They hated me freely".
